Well, enough of those HttB frenzy, let's look at some good old masterpiece that is useful and effective rather than all those kinky new toys everyone is talking about.
Thrown Gate is a combat card that falls into that rare category where by itself they can form the core or even the entirety of the combat package in a deck, be it for offense or defense. Put in some support card and they will shine even more, sometimes reaching the position where most other decks (even combat ones) will have a hard time handling decks that specialized in them.
POT combat is card intensive, you need to grab those maneuver cards to allow you to usually get close, Immortal Grapple to handle the combat ends, and then a strike card or before range card to make sure you hit hard enough. Thrown Gate, however, tend to go for the "fight you many times" with only a couple of cards while minimizing damage to oneself.
The true value of this card is the economy that it gives you. A single card like this gives a ranged damage and an optional maneuver, without limiting your strike effectiveness to long range only - making this a one man army card. With superior POT, vampires can go in again and again and just throw gates at your vampires until you either run out of defense cards or run out of blood. The ability of this one single card to allow your vampire to go to long usually also means that the opponent has less option hitting you, which is of course always a good thing.
There are several standard combination that goes well with this card, depending on what clan you use to do so. Most of the time you see Increased Strength with this card - at superior POT a single Thrown Gate can hit for 4, and if you stack multiples of Increased Strength when you see an opening, the Gate is really going to hurt. Thrown Gate can also be the backbone for the maneuver if you plan to use additional strikes with other more exotic ranged cards.
As part of an offensive package Thrown Gate is usually used with weenies or large number of minions, since it already offers economics for the card, as well as provide the maneuver for the otherwise less skilled vampires. It is usually less used in situations where you have options for more exotic cards when you're working with older vampires, and is more or less designated as a more defensive card in these cases.
Thrown Gate has no answer to combat ends and has to rely on Psyche to handle those cases when CEL is available. Otherwise you just to rely on enough minions and gates to harass the opponent enough times~

Thrown gate is a great card, something I should probably use more for casual combat. Some great cards to play with Thrown Gate include Increased Strength(as you mentioned), Mighty Grapple and Target Vitals. An important thing to note about Increased Strength is that you can play multiple copies and, unlike Torn Signpost, they stack. Like many combat cards that inflict damage, Thrown Gate goes well with Taste of Vitae.
